Always confirm with your instructor if you are permitted to use AI generated content for your assignments. It is important to be transparent and acknowledge that you have used AI tools by citing the content.
Generative AI is a new phenomenon, so many citation styles lack specific guidelines on how to cite content created by an AI tool like ChatGPT. Since content from generative AI cannot be retrieved or linked to, it is recommended that the content be referenced as personal communications or correspondence, unless the citation style has specific guidelines.
Guidelines for citing AI-generated text from MLA, APA and Chicago Manual of Style are listed below.

If you're including an AI generated image in your work, you need to include a citation. See below for guidance from MLA, APA and the Chicago Manual of Style.
MLA
See section 1.7 of the MLA Handbook. Use a description of the prompt, followed by the AI tool, version, and date created
APA
APA has not issued specific guidance on how to cite AI-generated images. Follow the general APA guidelines for citing audiovisual media, and include a note with the image indicating which AI tool was used as well as the prompt that was used to create the image.
Chicago Manual of Style
The Chicago Manual of Style's website recommends you cite AI-generated images like any other image, including both the name of the AI tool that generated the image, the company that created the AI, and the prompt that generated the image.
