PSC 241 - Introduction to Botanical Medicine

Introduction to Botanical Medicines - Course Description

Botanicals are one of the main sources of medicines. Many active pharmaceutical ingredients were discovered or derived from botanical origins, although more chemical and biological synthetic drugs have been developed in last century. Current advances in science and technologies are enabling the maximal utilization of botanicals for optimal clinical outcomes. This course introduces the chemistry of phytochemicals and metabolites as well as their mechanisms of actions, pharmacological effects, and potential risks. This is an updated pharmacognosy course at introductory level to cover botanical derived products utilizing the best available sciences.  Learning modalities will include interactive lectures, discussions, student projects and presentation with optional co-curricular activities such as laboratory observations, medicinal garden projects, and field trips.
